dana, i know you were at mr. romney's event at the american legion today because you tweeted a brilliant picture of a rolls-royce outside with a romney bumper sticker. we know -- there's the picture. we know wounded veterans and combat troops are part of the free loading 47%. so why is romney even worrying about them? that's not his job, is it? >> in fairness it wasn't just the one rolls that said my rolls on the virginia license plates. there were several bmws, mercedes, volvo. i noticed the odd cadillac and a jaguar as well. you know what's going on here is romney is sort of in permanent reaction mode. he was put on the defensive over the 47% remark, so he's got to go out and illustrate all these new examples of empathy and compassion, even if that contradicts what he said last week. he's gotten in trouble because he didn't mention veterans during his acceptance speech at the convention. okay. well, now they're going to throw on a veterans event and give a speech to the veterans about, you know, isn't it terrib

i want be to start with dana. i love your attitude. any way, what's your first way of looking at this? how do you know who is winning? >> well, i'm watching it in the filing center. i'm going to do a grown and laugh index. if you're growning when the guy is talking, he's losing. if you're laughing, that's better. you can do that for yourself at home. if you're cringing, the guy is not winning. romney has set this up in terms of zingers. >> why does it get out that he couldn't sleep last night? everything seems to leak out of this campaign. is he landing the zingers or do they boomerang next to him? ultimately, is he able to land a serious blow. if we're debating this on points needs to open this -- >> if you're jim lehrer, do you have the right or protocol to say to a guy who has delivered an manicured polished up thing you've been working on for three weeks to say, can we limit ourselves to a spontaneous conversation here? can you actually say that? or will the audience spot it and say, that's a prefab job that his guys thought up two

dana, i have to start with you. in your column today you write that his attacks on the president were respectful but defendant deft, referring to mr. romney. he joined obama deep in the weeds of policy and demonstrated a command of substance. now, dana, you know that i have nothing but a high regard for you, but how much of a command of substance is it for a man to disavow his own policies and not even know that there are 12 million unemployed in this nation and not 23 million? >> well, martin, it takes a real command of policy to be able to -- >> to lie? >> to manipulate it to your advantage. >> you're saying that his command of policies, just so i understand it, dana, because your columns are important, his command of policy allowed him to tell an absolute litany of lies last night? >> you know what? you know what allowed him to tell an absolute litany of lies? that was president obama. of course he said a lot of outrageous and untrue things. in the second paragraph of my column i said this line where he went afte

dana, if i might start with you. an insightful political observer such as yourself has seen these two gentlemen in many a debate. but if your path to success relies on mitt romney's comic timing, isn't the zinger likely to become something of a boomerang and hit mr. romney instead of his opponent? >> you know, everybody always remembers the great zingers. you know, usually something from ronald reagan, but here we go again expecting that people are going to try a little bit too hard. there's a real danger when you've been supplied with premixed, ready-made zingers to insert into the debate that mitt romney will insert them at the wrong time or say them not quite right. the only thing worse than having no zinger is having a zinger that comes off badly and comes back to bite you. so i think that's a perilous way to go, but i'll be there in denver, and i look forward to the attempts because it will make it far more interesting. >> indeed. we're delighted, ron, that you're here. you have devealed to us for the first time
